India and the US have announced a joint project to establish a national security semiconductor fabrication plant in India. This collaboration aims to produce chips for military hardware, next-generation telecommunications, and green energy applications.

The semiconductor plant will use advanced sensing, communication, and power electronics for national security. This will mark the inaugural India-US semiconductor fabrication collaboration. 

This marks the initial occasion that the US military has consented to work with India on these highly esteemed technologies. According to sources familiar with the matter, it is a pivotal moment as meaningful as the civil nuclear agreement.

The partnership involves support from the India semiconductor mission and a strategic technology partnership between Bharat Semi, 3rdiTech, and the US Space Force.

The project also includes efforts to facilitate resilient, secure, and sustainable semiconductor supply chains, including creating the GlobalFoundries (GF) Kolkata Power Center in Kolkata.

GlobalFoundries, the world’s third-largest chipmaker company, will likely build a state-of-the-art semiconductor factory in Kolkata, India. The factory may be named the GF Kolkata Power Center. 

Efforts have been made to facilitate a resilient, secure, and sustainable semiconductor supply chain, including creating the Kolkata factory. There are plans for a knowledge partnership to upskill students and faculty and a semiconductor design laboratory in collaboration with GlobalFoundries.

Kolkata has been considered a potential global competence centre for GlobalFoundries. Semiconductors are widely used in electronic equipment, national security, telecommunications, pollution-free environments, and Artificial Intelligence.

Plans are to expand cooperation around 5G deployment and next-generation telecommunications, including workforce training initiatives worldwide.
