The Indian Navy and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight-tested a vertically launched short-range surface-to-air missile off the coast of Odisha on Thursday.

The Defence Ministry confirmed that the missile system effectively tracked and intercepted the target. The flight test, which took place from a land-based vertical launcher, was aimed at a high-speed aerial target flying at a low altitude.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy conducted the successful flight test of the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha.

The Defence Ministry stated that the test was conducted to validate various updated weapon system components, including the proximity fuse and seeker.

According to the ministry, the system’s performance was carefully monitored and verified by different instruments, such as the radar electro-optical tracking system and telemetry deployed at ITR Chandipur.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended the DRDO and the Indian Navy teams for their achievement, stating that this test confirms the reliability and effectiveness of the VL-SRSAM weapon system.

Samir V Kamat, the chairman of the DRDO, also congratulated the teams involved, emphasising that the system would significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities and act as a force multiplier.
