India has signed an agreement with the International Co-operative Alliance Asia And Pacific (ICAAP) to develop further the core strengths, experience, and institutional objectives to progress the research, study, documentation, and training for the development of the cooperative sector. Lt Col Dr Baljit Singh, the Chief Director of the Laxmanrao Inamdar National Academy for Cooperative Research and Development (LINAC) under the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), signed the agreement. At the same time, Regional Director, ICAAP, Balasubramanian Iyer, spoke for the other party, the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying said in a statement.
India has over 8 lakh registered cooperative communities in the agricultural and agri-allied, banking, and housing sectors. The cooperative activity in the country has been in focus after the Central Government created the Ministry of Cooperation to provide a separate administrative, legal and policy framework for smooth-running the cooperatives.

ICAAP President Dr Chandra Pal Singh Yadav and National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) President Dileep Sanghani issued a policy recommendation handbook, “Sahakar Pragya: Good Practices for Cooperatives”. Which is a summary of guidelines, resources, methodologies, key learning, case studies of the best performing cooperatives in the country and abroad and the outcome and impact of it; the handbook will help these entities to get the goal of self-reliance. “This handbook will help cooperatives in India and abroad to innovate and acquire best models to be successful commercial entities,” the statement added.
