India-EU Trade Talks: Key Issues on Tariffs & Market Access

The EU, India’s largest trading partner, saw bilateral trade reach $137.5 billion in 2023-24.

European Union leaders are expected to push India to lower tariffs on cars and alcoholic beverages while seeking greater market access during Ursula von der Leyen’s visit to New Delhi.

After an eight-year gap, India-EU free trade talks, which restarted in 2021, now cover investment protection and geographical indications. The EU, India’s largest trading partner, saw bilateral trade reach $137.5 billion in 2023-24, growing 90% over the decade.

The EU wants India to cut high tariffs (100%-150%) on cars, whiskey, and wine, while India prefers a gradual reduction in consultation with local industry.

India also opposes the EU’s planned carbon tariffs (20%-35%) on steel, aluminium, and cement from 2026 and deforestation rules restricting imports.

The EU seeks easier profit repatriation and faster dispute resolution, while India insists disputes go through local courts first.

India also wants recognition as a data-secure nation and easier work access for its IT professionals, while the EU demands India open its legal and financial services sector.
