India, EU Decide to Launch Trade, Technology Council

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed on Monday to create an EU-India trade and technology committee to tackle the challenges of ensuring credible technology and security in the wake of rapid geopolitical changes. The decision was made during talks between Modi and Von der Leyen.

The EU said the Strategic Coordination Mechanism would enable both sides to “deepen cooperation in these areas by addressing challenges in the relationship between trade, trusted technology and security”. The two sides agreed that the rapid changes in the geopolitical environment underscored the need for joint in-depth strategic engagement, the statement said.

“The Trade and Technology Committee will provide political direction and the necessary structures to implement political decisions, coordinate technical work, and report to the political level to ensure implementation and follow-up in areas critical to the sustainable development of the European and Indian economy body,” the EU said in a statement. The EU stated that the shared values and interests of the EU and India provide a solid foundation for deepening mutually beneficial strategic cooperation.

“The EU and India have had a close partnership for decades and are determined to intensify joint efforts to address current challenges and the geopolitical environment,” it said. “The decision to establish a trade and technology committee will be the first for India with any of its partners, and the second for the EU after the first with the US,” the EU said.

It said the establishment of the EU-India Council is a crucial step in strengthening the strategic partnership for the benefit of all the people of the EU and India. The president of the European Commission began a two-day visit to India on Sunday against the backdrop of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

On Sunday, Von der Leyen said Russia’s war in Ukraine was a clear reminder that reliance on Russian fossil fuels is unsustainable and advocated for deeper cooperation between India and the EU to scale up clean energy use. In her presentation at the International Solar Alliance (ISA), she also spoke about the need for a sustainable way of doing business using clean energy. She highlighted the need to move to “homegrown clean energy” following the Russian aggression. Ukraine.
