‘India Committed to Strengthening Multilateral Trading System’: Goyal to WTO Chief

On Tuesday, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to reiterate India’s support for strengthening the multilateral trading system.


Goyal told a meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s 2022 annual meeting that India is committed to the WTO’s efforts to strengthen the multilateral trading system to ensure free and fair trade among member countries. He also met with Swiss State Secretary Marie-Gabriel Ineichen-Fleisch to exchange views on strengthening trade relations between India and Switzerland.


“India is an attractive market for Swiss cutting-edge technology and expertise to achieve scale and serve the world,” the minister later tweeted. Among his various meetings, Goyal also met with Queen Maxima of the Netherlands and held talks on further strengthening and renewing the Indo-Dutch relationship by expanding business and investment opportunities while also exploring prospects for cooperation between the two countries.


He also met with Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for External Trade, and Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the Energy Union of India, Minister of Industry of Denmark, Simon Kohlerup, Commerce and Financial Affairs of Denmark, Private industry and investment advisor to Bangladesh’s Private Industry and Investment Adviser to PM Salman F Rahman.
