India at Forefront for Affordable Data at just 12 Cents per GB

Modi discussed how millions of Indians have benefited from affordable data.

The nation currently provides internet access at an astoundingly low cost of just 12 cents per gigabyte (GB), according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who remarked on India’s outstanding performance in lowering data costs. According to him, this large price reduction has established India as a world leader in affordable digital products.

At the 2024 India Mobile Congress (IMC), Modi was delivering a speech. With 950 million internet users and more than 1.2 billion mobile users in the nation, the speaker underlined the significance of hosting the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) and IMC concurrently.

In his speech, Modi discussed how millions of Indians have benefited from affordable data, which has increased their access to opportunities, services, and information.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “While many countries charge 10 to 12 times more for data, India has made a concerted effort to ensure that connectivity is accessible to all.”

This achievement is part of India’s broader “Digital India” goal. The prime minister restated that the objective of this effort, which is to increase the number of people who are online and participating in the digital economy, depends on more people having access to affordable data.

He credits the push for domestic mobile device manufacture, which has reduced costs and expanded accessibility, with the nation’s success in decreasing expenses.

Modi stated that these cheap data prices have been made possible by large investments in telecommunications infrastructure, such as the introduction of 5G and the growth of fibre networks.

He added, “In just a decade, we have laid enough fibre to cover eight times the distance between the Earth and the moon.”

In closing, PM Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to keeping data costs low as a pillar of India’s digital strategy, making sure that the advantages of connection are felt throughout the entire nation.

Modi added, “In the digital age, affordability is key to equity, and we will continue to prioritise this in our policies.”
