Singapore and Southeast Asia should maintain strong ties with both India and China, given their crucial roles in regional growth, stated Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sim Ann, on Thursday.
She emphasised the importance of China and India as economic powerhouses and key global players.

The remarks were made at the launch of “China and India: Two Giants Shaping the Global Economy,” a series hosted by the East Asian Institute (EAI) and the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) at the National University of Singapore.
Experts at the event highlighted that China and India, the world’s first and third-largest economies by purchasing power parity, have significant global influence and account for 35% of the world’s population.
In 2024, China and India are expected to drive 50% of global economic growth.
Leading experts, including Dr Li Li from Tsinghua University and Professor C Raja Mohan from ISAS, noted that the two countries are key in trade, innovation, and tackling global challenges, as EAI Director Alfred Schipke stated.
The East Asian Institute (EAI) and Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) at NUS will organise workshops and public events to explore China and India’s growth strategies and their global economic impact, bringing together experts from various fields.
ISAS Director Iqbal Singh Sevea highlighted that both India and China are essential to the future of digitalisation and the transition to a green economy.
Sevea emphasised that India and China will shape the future global economy, making understanding their influence on global trends crucial.
