India recently on Saturday ended the ban on non-basmati white rice exports and established a minimum export price of USD 490 per tonne. This ban, which had been in place since July 2023, is lifted to meet the food security requirements of various nations.
Notably, prominent export destinations for Indian non-basmati white rice include Kenya, Mozambique, and Cameroon.
In July 2023, the Indian government had initially barred the export of non-basmati white rice. Still, it stipulated that exports could be permitted to fulfil the food security needs of other countries in response to their requests.
India has been exporting rice to various nations, including Nepal, Mauritius, Namibia, and other African countries.
During the fiscal year 2024, India recorded non-basmati white rice exports worth USD 852 million, with Kenya, Mozambique, and Cameroon ranking as the top export destinations.
From April to July of the financial year 2024-25, the exports amounted to USD 188.86 million, with most shipments going to Malaysia and Guinea.
“The export policy for non-basmati white rice (semi-milled or wholly milled rice, whether or not polished or gazed)…is amended from prohibited to free, subject to MEP of USD 490 per tonne with immediate effect and until further orders,” the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) said in a notification.
