Due to security concerns, the Hong Kong government is restricting most civil servants from using popular apps like WhatsApp, WeChat, and Google Drive on work computers.

The latest IT security guidelines from the Digital Policy Office have led to complaints from civil servants about added inconvenience.

Government workers can still use these services on personal devices and request exceptions with manager approval.

IT experts note that companies are implementing similar policies to address rising risks of data leaks and cybersecurity challenges.

Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, stated on a radio program that the ban is necessary due to the growing severity of hacking issues. He noted that the United States and China have also implemented strict measures for their internal computer systems.

A civil servant named Lee, who wished to remain anonymous, mentioned that her office frequently uses cloud storage services to share large files with external vendors.

The office announced on Facebook that the policy aims to block potentially harmful links and attachments from bypassing security via encrypted messages. It suggested that affected departments find alternatives, like using designated computers disconnected from internal systems.

Francis Fong, honorary president of the Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, expressed partial agreement with the government’s broad approach, noting it could lower cybersecurity risks and help prevent data breaches.

Anthony Lai, director of VX Research Limited, stated that the government’s approach is appropriate due to low cybersecurity awareness among some staff and inadequate internal monitoring systems.

Earlier this year, data breaches in several Hong Kong government departments compromised the personal information of tens of thousands of people, raising concerns.
