Hennes & Mauritz (H&M), a Swedish fashion brand, has filed a lawsuit against fashion retailer Shein for alleged copyright infringement in Hong Kong.
The brand has accused Shein of copying the design idea of its products.
According to H&M’s spokesperson, Shein engaged in the unauthorised reproduction of copyrighted works.
Shein is amongst the Chinese apps which have been banned by the Indian government in June 2020 following clashes with the Chinese army at the border. However, as per recent reports, the brand is set to re-enter the country through collaboration with Reliance Retail.
H&M has attached multiple photos of its products in the lawsuit, which include swimwear and sweaters, to argue that the brand has copied the design of its products.
The case was first filed back in 2021, and the hearings in the case are progressing in Hong Kong high court, with the next hearing date on July 31.
H&M has officially confirmed the lawsuit, whereas Shein has not made any statement on the matter so far.
Earlier this month, Shein came under another lawsuit filed by several artists in California on July 11. According to the artist, the brand has been using secretive algorithms to identify trending fashion created by other local artists and reproducing them for its website.
They have alleged the Chinese brand of racketeering and copyright infringement.
