Govt Weighs Job Quota for Locals in Ladakh

The proposals were drafted after talks with the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance.

The Union Cabinet discussed proposals to grant job reservations for locals in Ladakh’s Hill Development Councils and give official language status to Bhoti and other languages.

The proposals were drafted after talks with the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), which have been demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion in the 6th Schedule.

In December 2024, discussions focused on reserving 95% of local jobs, a one-third quota for women in hill councils, and granting state language status to Bhoti.

If approved, the job reservation plan would allocate 80% to tribals, 4% to those near the LAC, 1% to Scheduled Castes, and 10% to the Economically Weaker Section.

Ladakh became a separate Union Territory in 2019 without an assembly after the abrogation of Article 370.

In August 2024, the Centre created five new districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—placing Ladakh under the Union Home Ministry’s direct control.
