Food Minister Pralhad Joshi launched a pilot project to convert 60 ration shops into ‘Jan Poshan Kendras’ across UP, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Telangana, aimed at enhancing nutrition access and boosting the viability of these shops.

Joshi described this transformation as a “win-win” during the launch, emphasizing its benefits.

He pointed out operational inefficiencies, noting that some ration shops only open for 8-9 days a month, while others operate just once every three months, leaving them closed most of the time.

He stressed that the current commission structure for FPS dealers is insufficient, highlighting the need for better use of shop space and manpower.

Along with the pilot project, he introduced an upgraded ‘Mera Ration’ app and launched a Quality Manual Handbook, a Contract Manual for FCI, a Digital Quality Management System, and NABL accreditation for labs.

Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra emphasized efforts with SIDBI to provide easy credit for FPS dealers and partnerships with the Skill Development Ministry for entrepreneurship training.

With around 5.38 lakh FPS in India, successful pilot implementation could lead to a nationwide overhaul of the ration shop network. The All India Fair Price Shop Dealers’ Federation welcomed the initiative, calling it a “big relief” for shop owners facing viability challenges.

The launch event included senior FCI officials, state food secretaries, and World Food Programme representatives. The impact of transforming ration shops into nutrition hubs on dealers and beneficiaries will be observed as the pilot progresses.

eB2B platform Udaan announced a partnership with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and SIDBI to boost FPS dealers’ income and improve nutrition for beneficiaries.

As part of the initiative, about 60 FPS in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Gujarat will get credit facilities from SIDBI and access to over 3,500 Udaan products across staples and FMCG categories.
