The Government of India (GoI) has asked Wikimedia Foundation’s Wikipedia for removing a link from its platform which is showing the incorrect map of Jammu and Kashmir, according to sources.
Under the Section 69A of the IT Act, 2000, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has issued an order which directs Wikipedia to remove the link from its platform, they added.
The matter catches fire when a Twitter user highlighted that the Wikipedia page on the India-Bhutan relationship has incorrectly depicted the map of Jammu and Kashmir and asked the government to take action on it.
Sources said the ministry issued an order on 27 November 2020 taking an action on the recognition of the matter and directed Wikipedia to remove the link of a map as it violates the territorial integrity and sovereignty of India. The government can take legal action against Wikipedia, including blocking access of its entire platform, in case if it does not make changes, it added.
Last month, GoI had issued a notice to microblogging and social networking platform Twitter for depicting Leh as part of Jammu and Kashmir instead of showing it as a part of the Union Territory of Ladakh.
