Google Urges EU to be Flexible in Setting Digital Rule Book

In view of the forthcoming Digital Services Act, Google compelled the European Commission on Thursday to not use a one-size-fits-all method to the tech industry.

The EU executive is drawing up areas such as data-sharing, the digital marketplace in the boosting competition new rules. This is followed by the verdict that multiple antitrust actions against Google have been ineffectual.

The Commission’s public consultation period ends on September 8. Google encouraged European legislators to provide greater clarity regarding the rules and responsibilities of online platforms through a blog containing a submission of 135 pages.

It mentioned that although it was essential to identify illegal content, mandating the use of technology to do that could ‘overclock’ Europeans’ speech and access to information.

In regard to operations on cloud platforms and search engines, Google stated the need for an update to these rules, including a graduated scheme of exemptions from liability.

Hosting services such as Google’s YouTube video channel should have to act expeditiously to remove or disable access to an illegal content, Google said, but expressed concern that companies may be forced to prioritize speed over careful decision-making.

New rules should also encourage new and improved features and products and help European consumers get things done quickly. The rules, Google said, should not create undue costs and burdens for European businesses seeking to recover from a global pandemic.
