Alphabet reopened Google News in Spain on June 22, eight years after the service was shut down due to Spanish rules forcing companies and other news aggregators to pay publishers to use their news snippets.
Madrid amended EU copyright law in 2020, allowing media outlets to negotiate directly with technology giants. The move prompted Google to announce last year that it would reopen Google News next year.
“Today, on the 20th anniversary of Google News worldwide, and after a hiatus of almost eight years, Google News is returning to Spain,” Iberia Vice President Fuencisla Clemares said in a blog post.
She said the company plans to launch its car Google News Showcase to pay Spanish news publishers as soon as possible.
