Google Introduces Topics Tool to Replace Cookies

Google has announced Topics, a new Privacy Sandbox for interest-based advertising. Google has begun the Privacy Sandbox plan to improve web privacy for users. Topics work by highlighting five of users interests which will represent the top interests of users for that week based on their browsing history. Topics will be kept for only three weeks, and old topics will be deleted.

“Topics are selected from user’s device without involving any external servers, including Google’s servers. When users visit a participating site, the Topics tool picks three topics to share with the site and its advertising partners,” Google said in a blog post. Topics will also allow browsers to provide transparency and control over this data.

“In Chrome, we are creating user controls that allow users to see the topics, and remove any if they don’t like or disable the feature completely,” Google said. Google will launch a developer trial of Topics in Chrome which will include user controls and will allow website developers and the ads industry to try it out. The final design of the user controls and the other different aspects of how Topics works will be decided based on the feedback, Google added in the blog post.
