Google has appointed Noam Shazeer, former head of Character.AI and a long-time Google researcher, to co-lead its main AI project, Gemini.
Shazeer will join Jeff Dean and Oriol Vinyals as a technical lead on Gemini, which is being developed by Google’s AI division, DeepMind.
Gemini is integrated into products like Google Search and Pixel smartphones. Shazeer rejoined Google from Character.AI, with Google investing billions to bring him and other key employees back to DeepMind.
Noam Shazeer had first joined Google back in 2000, two years after the company was founded and was also a co-author of a seminal 2017 research paper that catalysed the current AI boom.
Earlier, Google was planning to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Charater.AI but later decided to bring Shazeer back into the company.
The same strategy was used by companies, including Microsoft and Amazon, where they acquire talent from AI startups, which comes at a time when the Big Tech companies are facing regular scrutiny.
Moreover, in August, a US judge ruled that the company’ ’s search engine has violated antitrust law, and is spending billions of dollars to create an illegal monopoly.
