General Motors Temporarily Suspends Twitter Ads After Musk Takeover

GM temporarily stopped advertising on Twitter after the social media platform was acquired by Elon Musk.

General Motors has temporarily stopped advertising on Twitter Inc after the social media platform was acquired by Elon Musk, the head of the rival automaker Tesla Inc.

The Detroit automaker, catching up to Tesla in electric vehicle development, said on Friday that it is talking to Twitter about how the platform will change and will stop advertising until it better understands what will happen when Musk takes the helm.

“We are working with Twitter to understand where the platform is headed under new ownership,” spokesman David Barnes said in a statement. “As a normal business process, the media platform is undergoing significant changes, and we are temporarily suspending it. Paid advertising. Our customer service interactions on Twitter will continue.”

Since closing the acquisition on Thursday, Musk said he would convene a content committee to decide the criteria for users and their tweets. One consideration is allowing suspended public figures like former President Donald Trump to return to the platform.

Led by CEO Mary Barra, the Detroit company was one of the first automakers to announce a multibillion-dollar effort to compete with Tesla in electric vehicles.
