Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) founder Mulayam Singh Yadav died on October 10 at a private hospital in Gurugram. 82-year-old Yadav was being treated for various health problems.
News of Mulayam Singh Yadav’s death was confirmed through the official Twitter account of the Samajwadi Party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Mulayam Singh Yadav and lauded his “remarkable personality”. PM tweeted, “Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji was a remarkable personality. He was widely admired as a humble and down-to-earth leader who was sensitive to the people’s problems and dedicated his life to popularising the ideals of Lok Nayak. JP and Dr Lohia.”
Yadav, also known as “Netaji” among his followers and party staff, is a survivor of Akhilesh Yadav, who was the head of the SP and former chief minister of the UP. Akhilesh is the son of the SP patriarch’s first wife, Malti Devi, who died in 2003.
The veteran politician was admitted to Medanta Hospital on August 22. Yadav was taking life-saving medication as his condition had been extremely critical for the past few days. However, after his condition worsened, he was put on a ventilator and admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) on October 2. Recent reports show an “integrated team treated him of specialists.”
According to Medanta Hospital, Mulayam Singh Yadav suffers from severe lung and kidney problems. He has reportedly been facing breathing difficulties and has also been on dialysis for kidney problems.
The SP Patriarch has suffered from various health-related ailments for the past three years, and his public appearances have been limited in recent years.
Yadav is a former MP for the Mainpuri constituency in Uttar Pradesh. He served as the state’s chief minister three times – 1989-1991, 1993-1995 and 2003-2007. He also served as Union Minister of Defense from 1996 to 1998. He was elected to Up Legislative Assembly ten times and Lok Sabha seven times.
Mulayam Singh Yadav was first elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1967. In 1989, Yadav was first elected chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. He founded the Samajwadi Party in 1992.
