On Tuesday, The BJP-led NDA announced Draupadi Murmu as its candidate for the upcoming Presidential election. If she is elected, Murmu will become India’s first tribal President and second female President.
Murmu was born on June 20, 1958, and served as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. Originally from a tribal community in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, Murmu started as a teacher before entering politics in Odisha. She became MLA twice from BJP tickets in Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj (2000 and 2009).
During her political career, she held several key positions within the party. From 2013 to 2015, Murmu was also the national executive member of BJP ST Morcha.
She started her political career in 1997 by winning as an MP and becoming the Deputy Chairman of Rairangpur, Odisha. The same year, she was elected State Vice-President of BJP ST Morcha.
Murmu handles various fields, including transportation and commerce in Odisha. She has also worked in multiple sectors, including fisheries and livestock.
