Up to 128 wheels for the new Vande Bharat train will be shipped to India in three batches; media reported that more than 40 wheels are scheduled to arrive in Chennai on May 12. These wheels will be used in the first set of Vande Bharat train prototypes, enabling it to start trial runs this July.
India ordered 36,000 wheels from a Ukrainian company that stopped production because it had to be involved in the war. However, some 128 wheels were still transported by road to Romania, from where they will now be airlifted.
More than 40 wheels are scheduled to arrive in Chennai on May 12, and the rest are said to arrive in two batches. Necessary measures are being taken to ensure that the goods arrive on time. By August 2023, 75 of these trains are expected to operate.
India also ordered wheels from the Czech Republic, Poland, and the US to meet the requirements. The government is also driving the process by increasing the production of axles required for these wheels. The axles are produced at the Railway Wheels factory in Bangalore. The government is also considering importing wheels from China.
