E-commerce giant Amazon has inked a deal with VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd, a joint venture between Eicher Motors and Volvo Group, to buy 1,000 electric trucks across various payload categories into Amazon’s middle-mile and last-mile delivery operations over the next five years. Eicher Trucks and Buses, a division of VE Commercial Vehicles, will supply the trucks.
With this move, Amazon aims to electrify its delivery fleet in India, shifting towards eco-friendly delivery mechanisms. The company’s broader mission is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
Eicher has designed these state-of-the-art electric trucks, jam-packed with technological advancements, tailored especially for transport efficiency. These trucks come in various deck lengths ranging from 8 to 24 feet with customisable cargo stacking arrangements and dual charging speeds.
Amazon will purchase and deploy 50 Eicher electric trucks across key localities like Delhi, Manesar, Indore and Gurugram to kick-start the green initiative.
The company has already deployed electric vehicles (EVs) in its delivery fleet through service partners across 400 cities in India. Amazon India’s VP Abhinav Singh said the company aims to incorporate 10,000 EVs into their delivery fleet by 2025.
