EAM Jaishankar: US Relationship Will Strengthen Regardless of Election Outcome

Jaishankar stated that the US-India relationship has progressed steadily over the last five presidencies.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Australian counterpart Penny Wong held a joint press conference to discuss important global issues, including the US Presidential Elections.

Jaishankar stated that the US-India relationship has progressed steadily over the last five presidencies, including during Trump’s tenure, and expressed confidence that it will continue to grow regardless of the election outcome.

The upcoming US Presidential Elections will feature a race between the Democrats, led by VP Kamala Harris, and the Republicans, led by former President Donald Trump, with voting starting on 5th November.

Kamala Harris was nominated as the Democratic candidate after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race due to concerns about his age, particularly following a poor debate performance against Trump in June.

Kamala Harris is the first female, first black, and first Asian American vice president. If elected president, she would be the first woman to hold the position in US history. She is only the second woman nominated for the presidency by a major political party.

Regarding President Donald Trump and the QUAD grouping, Jaishankar noted that QUAD was revived during Trump’s presidency in 2017 and elevated from a permanent secretary level to a ministerial level.

Jaishankar highlighted that despite COVID restrictions, one of the few physical meetings of Foreign Ministers in 2020 was the QUAD meeting in Tokyo, indicating its significance.

The QUAD grouping includes India, Australia, Japan, and the US.

They are committed to a free and open Indo-Pacific that is inclusive and resilient, promoting a rules-based international order that emphasises freedom, human rights, the rule of law, democratic values, and sovereignty.

Under former President Donald Trump’s leadership, the US implemented significant reforms, including renegotiating trade agreements, reforming the tax code, and improving healthcare access for veterans.

Trump is running for a second presidential term with JD Vance as his vice-presidential nominee, and his presidency notably strengthened the QUAD grouping, as highlighted by Jaishankar during his remarks in Australia.

EAM emphasised that the QUAD serves a larger purpose beyond security. The QUAD includes four democracies with market economies and a strong global contribution.

All member countries are maritime nations working together on a common agenda.
