To decrease meat consumption city of Haarlem banned meat advertisements; consequently, this would cut greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change, media reports. The contemporarily Dutch city of Harlem is the only city in this world that has banned meat advertisements.
The city of Haarlem, located in the Northwest Netherland, has prohibited meat advertisements. Prohibition will be enforced in 2024. Recent research claimed globally, one-third of greenhouse emissions are attributed to meat consumption and production, which contributes to Global Warming.
The advertisement has already been removed from shelters, buses, and public screens. The event has sparked criticism from the Central Organization for Meat Sector. Data from the United Nations states that more than 14 per cent of all human-made greenhouse gases are produced by cattle farming. Before this, Amsterdam and The Hague had also outlawed the fossil fuel industry and commercial aviation.
According to United Nations (UN) report issued in 2006, greenhouse gases like methane, CO2, and Nitrous oxide are likely to spew more into the atmosphere by the meat sector than either transportation or Industry. Another factor that causes global warming is turning forests into a pasture, and overgrazing causes the loss of topsoil, which leads to soil erosion.
