Droupadi Murmu Elected as 15th President of India

Former Jharkhand governor and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Droupadi Murmu was elected India’s 15th president, the first and youngest tribal woman to be elected to the position. She was elected on Thursday after four rounds of counting. However, she was more than halfway through the third round, indisputably ahead of her rival and opposition candidate, Yashwant Sinha, who later conceded the election.

After four rounds of voting, Ms Murmu won 2,824 out of 6,76,803 votes, while Sinha received 1,877 or 3,80,177 votes. She received 64.03% of the total valid votes, far more than she publicly declared support for, noting that there were many votes in opposition parties against Ms Murmu.

“I officially announce in my capacity as Electoral Officer that Smt. Droupadi Murmu has been duly elected as the President of India,” P.C. Secretary-General Mody of the Rajya Sabha, the election official, was designated for the election.
