On September 3, 2024, the Defence Acquisition Council, India, led by Rajnath Singh, sanctioned 10 capital acquisition proposals totaling Rs 1,44,716 crore for tanks, radars, and other equipment.

Notably, almost all (99%) of the expenditure originates from domestic sources. The Indian Army’s tank fleet is set to modernise by acquiring Future Ready Combat Vehicles equipped with advanced mobility and protection.

To promote local production, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), overseen by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for 10 capital acquisition proposals totaling Rs 1,44,716 crore.

An official statement indicated that 99% of the total cost of AoNs comes from Indigenous sources under the Buy (Indian) and Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured) categories.

Key details regarding the proposals sanctioned by DAC:

1. Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs):

Out of the 10 projects, the Defence Ministry has approved the procurement of Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs) to modernise the Indian Army’s tank fleet.

As per the official statement, the FRCV will be an advanced Main Battle Tank with superior mobility, all-terrain capability, layered protections, precision and lethal firepower, and real-time situational awareness.

2. Air Defence Fire Control Radars

The AoN was also granted for acquiring Air Defence Fire Control Radars, designed to detect and track aerial targets and provide firing solutions. The Forward Repair Team (Tracked) proposal has also been approved, providing suitable cross-country mobility for in-situ repair during mechanised operations.

The Defence Ministry stated that the equipment is developed by Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited and is authorised for mechanised Infantry Battalions and Armoured Regiments.

3. Proposals for ICG:

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) will receive three new assets to enhance its capabilities. These include Dornier-228 aircraft, Next-Generation Fast Patrol Vessels, and Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels.

These new additions will allow the ICG to conduct better surveillance, patrol the maritime zone, and improve its search and rescue and disaster relief operations, especially in rough weather conditions.

Before approving the proposals, the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the procurement of new engines for the Su30MKI fighter jet deal on Monday. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will be awarded a Rs 26,000 crore contract to manufacture them at its Koraput plant.

The AL-31FP engines will be delivered over eight years and have an Indigenous content of over 54%. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led CCS has approved the order for 240 of these engines, which will replace older engines approaching the end of their service life.
