Cybercrime Boost by 5% in 2021; Probe Held in Just Third of Case

Cybercrime has increased by 15 per cent since 2019 and 5 per cent since 2020; in 2021, as per the latest government data, 52,974 cases of cybercrime were registered 2021. Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Assam are states where 70 per cent of cybercrimes were registered.

As per the data released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) ‘Crime in India – 2021’. The average rate of cybercrime cases was recorded at 3.1 in 2021 on an average of one per lakh population, and the charge-sheet rate in the cases was recorded at 33.8 per cent in 2021, which implies that police probes held against only one-third of the case.

As per the report, the most common motive majorly was fraud in 60 per cent of cases of cybercrime, followed by sexual exploitation in 8.6 per cent of cases and extortion in 5.4 per cent of cases. Regarding States and Union Territories, the highest number of criminal cases were registered in Telangana (10,303). Uttar Pradesh (8,829), Karnataka (8,136), Maharashtra (5,562), and Assam (4,846), meanwhile Delhi had only 356 such cases as per the data released by NCRB.

The figures of other cases reported across the country mentioned in the data are 4,071 Identity theft, 11,422 cheating and 9000 plus cases of circulating obscene, sexual content, 55 cases related to manipulating computer source documents, and 648 cases of Ransomware. Cyberstalking and bullying of children cases were also registered.
