China has approved the construction of a mega dam in Tibet, which is expected to generate three times the power of the world’s largest hydropower plant, the Three Gorges Dam, but could reduce water flow in the Brahmaputra River.
China has approved the construction of a mega-dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, which becomes the Brahmaputra in India. The dam raises geopolitical, environmental, and seismic concerns due to its location near Arunachal Pradesh.
The dam is expected to generate three times more power than the Three Gorges Dam, producing 300 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, compared to 88.2 billion kWh from the Three Gorges Dam.
The total investment in the project could exceed 1 trillion yuan ($137 billion), and while it may not significantly affect the Brahmaputra, it could reduce water flow in the river.
India has expressed concerns, as the dam may impact millions in India and Bangladesh, particularly downstream areas. The project was included in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, with President Xi Jinping mentioning it during his Tibet visit in 2021.
China’s state-run Xinhua news agency claims the project will focus on environmental protection and contribute to the region’s green energy transition, adding solar and wind energy resources.
