The central government has prolonged restrictions on sugar exports till October 2023; the objective is to increase the availability of the commodity in the domestic market. Earlier, the restrictions were imposed till October 31, 2022.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification that the restriction on the export of sugar (refined, raw and white sugar) is extended beyond October 31, 2022, till October 31, 2023, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. And other conditions would remain unaffected.

However, under the CXL and TRQ duty concession quotas, this restriction would not apply to sugar exports to the EU and the US. Under this CXL and TRQ (tariff rate quota), a specified amount of sugar would be exported to regions. Presently, India is the second largest exporter and largest producer of sugar in the world.
