California Announces to Phase Out New Gas-Powered Vehicles By 2035

California on Wednesday unveiled an aggressive plan to mandate continued growth in sales of electric and zero-emission vehicles, the first step in implementing the first-country goal of banning new petrol-powered vehicles by 2035. Under the proposed rules issued by the California Air Resources Board, 35% of new passenger vehicles sold in the state by 2026 must be powered by batteries or hydrogen. Less than a decade later, the state expects 100% of all new car sales to be free of fossil fuel emissions, which are mainly responsible for global warming.

Currently, 12.4% of new cars sold in California are zero-emissions, according to the board. If the board finalises the plan in August, it could set the bar for the country’s automobile industry. California is the largest auto market in the United States and the 10th largest globally. Also, 15 other states, including New York, Massachusetts, and North Carolina – have previously followed California’s steps regarding tailpipe emissions and may accept similar proposals.

“It’s essential,” said Daniel Sperling, a member of the California Aviation Board and director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Davis. He said the proposed rules, which he hopes to pass, send a signal to the world auto market. “Other countries and other states, they see what California does,” he said. “And so, it will resonate around the world.” The proposal comes as President Joe Biden’s climate agenda is ruined. Biden signed an executive order last year urging the government to ensure that by 2030, half of all cars sold in the United States will be electric.

However, legislation to help make the transition by allocating billions of dollars in electric vehicle tax breaks has been stalled in the Senate. Meanwhile, under pressure to ease high oil prices, the president urges oil companies to drill for more oil. The automaker did not immediately respond to a request for comment on California’s proposed rules.

China Halts Rare Earth Magnet Supply to India, EV Makers Face Setback

Dhruva Kulkarni

Indian EV and auto component manufacturers face production challenges as China halts rare earth magnet exports to India from 4th April.

Rare earth magnets are crucial for traction motors and other EV components, making the restriction a significant setback for the industry.

Indian manufacturers are seeking government assistance to mitigate supply chain disruptions and potential slowdowns in EV production.

New Chinese regulations require exporters to provide an end-user certificate confirming the magnets won’t be used for weapons or transferred to third parties, with approval needed from both the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Chinese Embassy.

Trump Pushes Deep-Sea Mining, Sparks Environmental Alarm

Dhruva Kulkarni

Trump has ordered a fast-track start to deep-sea mining in US and international waters, bypassing global norms and prompting a sharp response from China, which says the move violates international law.

The US aims to lead seabed mining efforts and reduce China’s dominance over critical minerals, using a 1980 law to issue permits instead of following the UN-affiliated International Seabed Authority (ISA).

The White House claims this push could add $300 billion to the US economy, create 100,000 jobs, and support defence, energy, and advanced manufacturing industries.

Environmentalists warn of severe ecological risks, calling the decision reckless and dangerous for one of Earth’s most fragile ecosystems.

China, which holds the most ISA permits but hasn’t begun mining, criticised the US for bypassing international regulations and pursuing unilateral seabed activity.

US firms like Impossible Metals and The Metals Company are already acting on the order, with plans to mine both within US waters and in international zones, drawing praise from industry leaders.

Ex-South Korean President Moon Indicted in Bribery Case

Dhruva Kulkarni

Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in was indicted Thursday over bribery charges tied to a no-show job given to his son-in-law during his presidency.

Prosecutors allege Moon received benefits worth 217 million won ($151,700) from Lee Sang-jik, founder of Eastar Jet, through wages and support provided to Moon’s former son-in-law between 2018 and 2020.

Lee, a Moon campaign supporter, was also indicted. While no direct favours were proven, prosecutors believe Lee expected returns for the assistance. He was later appointed to a state agency and nominated for parliament by Moon’s party.

The indictment comes ahead of South Korea’s 3rd June election, following the ouster of conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol. Moon has not commented, but his party has slammed the charges as politically motivated.

Moon, in office from 2017 to 2022, was known for outreach to North Korea, which remains a divisive legacy.

Volvo to Slash 800 US Jobs as Q1 Income Falls by $500 Million on Weak Truck Demand

Dhruva Kulkarni

Volvo AB’s income fell in the first quarter as uncertainty over US tariffs hit truck demand in North America.

Operating income dropped to 13.3 billion kronor ($1.4 billion) from 18.2 billion kronor a year earlier. The company also cut its full-year forecast for North America’s heavy-duty truck market to 275,000 units, down from around 300,000.

European truck makers are feeling the pressure from weaker demand and tighter pricing, which are squeezing profits. For Volvo, the lack of clarity on US trade policy is expected to further strain freight activity and equipment sales in the coming months.

In response, Volvo plans to lay off up to 800 workers across three US facilities. The company, which manufactures all its North American trucks locally, also said it would seek compensation from customers to offset rising production costs caused by the new tariffs.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s truck division Traton SE, which owns Scania and MAN, warned of lower profits this quarter due to falling deliveries and sales.

Renault Opens Largest Design Centre Outside Europe in India to Accelerate Local Launches

Dhruva Kulkarni

Renault inaugurated its largest design centre outside Europe in India on Tuesday, located within the Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre in Chennai. The facility currently hosts 32 designers, with plans to expand to 40 soon.

Laurens van den Acker, Renault’s Chief Design Officer, expressed satisfaction with India’s design and development capabilities, noting that the studio had previously focused on vehicles for the European market.

The centre will design and support engineering for five Renault models to be launched in India over the next five years at an accelerated pace.

Venkatram Mamillapalle, Country Managing Director and CEO of Renault India highlighted that India’s automotive market is expected to grow faster than the global average, with the Total Industry Volume (TIV) projected to rise from 4.3 million to 10 million. The new design centre will help Renault expand its footprint in India, focusing on customer needs and preferences for SUVs.

The centre’s location and time zone offer efficiency, enabling design work to continue while other global operations are offline. India’s strong engineering and design talent pool is essential for speeding up design-engineer-build cycles.

A few weeks ago, Renault announced its plan to acquire Nissan’s 51% stake in their Indian joint venture, with the transition expected to be completed within two months.

Renault is also developing an electric vehicle for India, though widespread EV adoption is still a few years away. EVs currently make up less than 2% of the market but are expected to account for 10–12% in the next 5–7 years.
