The Union Cabinet has approved a 12.9 km ropeway from Sonprayag to Kedarnath under the Parvatmala Pariyojana, with an investment of Rs 4,081 crore to enhance accessibility and tourism.
Additionally, a 12.4 km ropeway from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib has been approved for Rs 2,730 crore.
Both projects will be developed under the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) model to improve connectivity in remote hilly areas.
The Kedarnath ropeway, one of the longest in the world, will be constructed at 3,583 meters and will reduce travel time from 6-7 hours to just 60 minutes.
Similarly, the Hemkund Sahib ropeway will cut the 12-hour trek to just 45 minutes, making access easier for pilgrims.
Initial cost estimates for these projects were significantly lower but have been revised to align with development requirements.
