On April 3, the famous Banarasi Paan received a Geographical Indication (GI) label for its delicacy. This label indicates that products from a particular region have qualities that are unique to that region.
Banarasi Paan is made with special ingredients and is known for its unique and delicious taste. Padma winner Geographical Indications expert Dr Rajinikant said Banarasi Langda mangoes, Ramnagar Bhanta (eggplant) and Adamchini rice are the other three Varanasi commodities to be GI-labeled besides Banarasi Paan. With this achievement, 22 geographical indication products belong to the Kashi region.
In collaboration with NABARD (National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development) Uttar Pradesh, GI applications for 20 state-based products have been submitted during the Covid phase. This year, with the help of NABARD and the Yogi Adityanath government, 11 products, including 7 ODOP and 4 Kashi region products, have been granted GI status.
Rajnikant further stated that two million people, including artisans, produce GI products in the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh, including those from Varanasi.
These products are estimated to generate revenue of Rs 25,500 crore annually. He also hopes to add the remaining nine items to the national intellectual property list by the end of next month. Some of them are Banaras Lal Peda, Banarasi Thandai, Tirangi Barfi, Banaras Lal Bharwa Mirch and Banaras Lal Peda.
More than 1,000 farmers will receive a GI-approved user certificate upon registration. AGM Anuj Kumar Singh of NABARD congratulates all participating farmers, producers, FPOs and affiliated self-help groups. He also announced that NABARD would launch several programs to advance these GI products soon. Financial institutions will help with production and sales, he added.
