Australia Warns on DeepSeek and Privacy Concerns

Vaishnaw emphasised that the real value of AI lies in algorithmic efficiency and quality data.

Australia’s Science Minister Ed Husic raised privacy concerns about China’s DeepSeek AI chatbot, urging users to be cautious before downloading it.

DeepSeek, developed by a China-based startup, has surged to the top of app charts, surpassing ChatGPT.

Husic emphasised the need for careful consideration of quality, data management, and privacy, noting that Chinese companies often have different practices than their Western counterparts.

He warned that while Chinese products may succeed in their domestic market, they may not be embraced in regions with different privacy expectations.

In 2018, Australia banned the Chinese company Huawei from its 5G network due to national security concerns.

Lawmakers Urge Trump to Consider New Curbs on Nvidia Chips for China’s DeepSeek

Dhruva Kulkarni

Two U.S. Congress members, Republican John Moolenaar and Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi, are urging President Trump’s administration to consider restricting exports of Nvidia AI chips, citing their use by Chinese AI firm DeepSeek.

They requested as part of a review led by the Commerce and State Departments to assess U.S. export controls on strategic adversaries.

The lawmakers allege that DeepSeek’s new AI model heavily relies on Nvidia’s H20 chip, which is currently outside U.S. export restrictions.

Growing concerns in Washington focus on China’s rapid AI advancements, with DeepSeek claiming its AI assistant uses less data at a lower cost than competitors.

The U.S. House of Representatives has notified its offices not to use DeepSeek, citing a review. The U.S. government is concerned China could use AI for cyberattacks or bioweapons, prompting efforts to limit access to AI chips.

Nvidia stated that its products comply with government requirements and is ready to collaborate with the administration.

Germany Faces Recession Fears as Economy Shrinks by 0.2% in Q4 Ahead of Election

Dhruva Kulkarni

The German economy contracted more than expected in the final quarter of last year, raising recession fears as the country faces uncertainty ahead of federal elections.

Germany’s GDP fell by 0.2% in the fourth quarter, worse than the 0.1% drop expected. If the economy contracts again in the first quarter of 2025, it will officially enter a recession.

The German economy has faced pressure from rising competition, high energy costs, high interest rates, and uncertain economic prospects. It shrank for a second year in 2024.

The government revised its 2025 growth forecast to 0.3% from an earlier 1.1% due to trade tensions and domestic uncertainty, especially ahead of the federal elections.

Some business groups predict further contraction in 2025, marking three years of decline, a first since reunification.

Economic issues led to the collapse of the government in November, triggering snap elections on 23rd February, with the economy as the main concern for voters.

India Considers Reducing Duties on US Goods After Trump’s Tariff Comments

Dhruva Kulkarni

India is considering reducing tariffs on select high-end goods from the United States, including steel, motorcycles, and electronics, with confirmation expected when Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents the budget on Saturday.

Currently, India imposes over 100% of its duties on 20 items from the US.

US President Donald Trump criticised India, China, and Brazil as “tremendous tariff makers,” emphasising his “America First” policy.

His comments echoed earlier statements during his election campaign, where he proposed reciprocal tariffs in trade.

Trump’s “America First” economic model aims to boost US manufacturing by raising tariffs on goods like steel, semiconductors, and medicines while reducing taxes for American workers and businesses.

This approach is seen as both a way to stimulate US manufacturing and as a “weapon” in international conflicts, as demonstrated by his clash with Colombia over deportations.

Trump Delays Colombia Tariffs, Reaches Migrant Deal

Dhruva Kulkarni

US President Trump has delayed tariffs and sanctions on Colombia after the country agreed to accept all illegal Colombian migrants returned from the US, including those on military planes.

The deal will remain in effect unless Colombia fails to honour it. President Petro and Foreign Minister Murillo confirmed that Colombia will continue receiving deported nationals.

Trump had earlier threatened a 25% tariff on Colombian goods, set to rise to 50%, along with travel restrictions and other sanctions, after Colombia blocked military planes carrying deported migrants.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered visa suspensions and travel restrictions for those blocking the deportations, which will remain until deportees are successfully returned.

Trump’s tariff threat created uncertainty in global markets, affecting emerging-market currencies like the Mexican peso and South African rand, despite the reversal of the decision.

Trump Criticises California Water Policy Ahead of LA Fire Damage Tour

Dhruva Kulkarni
trump Impacts on Indian Stock Market

President Donald Trump, ahead of his California wildfire damage tour, has focused on criticising the state’s water policy.

As Trump prepares to tour California wildfire damage, he criticises the state’s water policies, accusing it of directing excessive water to the Pacific Ocean instead of supporting cities and farms.

Trump has directed federal agencies to route more water to farmers and cities, reigniting debates over environmental protection and water allocation.

Southern California relies on local water supplies, state projects, and the federally managed Colorado River, while conflicts arise over water flow through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Hydrant issues in LA fires stemmed from overuse and reservoir maintenance, not state water policies, with officials investigating the mismanagement.

California’s water debate continues, with environmentalists and farmers divided, as the state balances conservation with resource demands.
