Australia plans to reopen its borders to fully vaccinated travellers from 21st February. PM Scott Morrison announced on Monday after almost two years since he closed the border to non-citizens to reduce the coronavirus cases. “If you are fully vaccinated, we look forward to welcoming you back to Australia,” PM Morrison said in a media briefing.
Strict border controls and lockdowns helped Australia maintain its Covid-19 cases far lower than other countries, but circumstances have increased to record highs in recent weeks due to the Omicron variant. PM Morrison adopted a ‘push through’ approach to deal with the Omicron variant that saw several lockdowns and harsh restrictions ahead of a federal election. Around 2.4 million cases have been registered since the first Omicron case was detected in Australia in November. Until then, Australia had recorded around 2 Lakh cases.
