Apple Faces $20 Billion Risk due to Google Antitrust

The US-based company exported around $6 billion worth of iPhones built in India.

Apple’s deal with Google can be under duress after the US judge ruled against Google running an illegal monopoly.

To avoid antitrust actions, Google might need to end its agreement, making its search engine the default on Apple devices. Google pays Apple $20 billion annually for this privilege, accounting for about 36% of its earnings from search advertising through Safari.

Terminating the deal could reduce Apple’s profit by 4-6%. The agreement is in place until at least September 2026, with Apple having the option to extend it for two more years.

If the Google-Apple search deal ends, Apple could explore other options, such as offering Microsoft Bing or developing an AI-powered search product with OpenAI.

Apple recently announced plans to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot and is in discussions with Google to include the Gemini chatbot along with other AI models.

Additionally, Apple is enhancing Siri with AI to handle more complex tasks. These efforts aim to leverage new technology despite minimal immediate financial gains.
