Amazon has teamed up with Hyundai to sell cars online, with the venture set to kick off in the second half of 2024. The announcement was made at the ‘2023 LA Auto Show,’ marking a significant development in the automotive retail space.
While Amazon already sells car accessories and operates an “Amazon Vehicle Showrooms” site, this venture takes a step further by allowing customers to purchase vehicles directly from the platform. Hyundai vehicles will be the inaugural offerings available on Amazon’s US online store, with plans to introduce vehicles from other brands later in the same year.
Customers will have the flexibility to explore various preferences, including model, trim, colour, and features, before completing their purchase on Amazon. The agreement facilitates a seamless process, allowing customers to choose their preferred payment and financing options. The purchased vehicle can then be picked up or delivered by the local dealership, providing convenience to buyers.
Mike Sullivan, president and owner of several LA-area dealerships, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, recognising Amazon’s role in enhancing customer experience and market reach. Hyundai Motor CEO Jay Chang highlighted the strategic significance, emphasising the opportunities for growth, electrification, and smart mobility.
This move expands on a previous agreement between Hyundai and Amazon to enhance Hyundai’s digital showroom on Amazon.com. The integration of Amazon Web Services (AWS) as Hyundai’s preferred cloud provider, along with the incorporation of Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant in Hyundai’s vehicles from 2025, further cements the multifaceted nature of this collaboration.
