E-commerce giant, Amazon on Friday said that it will deliver medicines at the doorstep of consumers. The latest move of Amazon to enter in pharmacy sector will help the company to widen its reach in the market growth.
The company said it would launch an online pharmacy in India and create an ecosystem by delivering products from grocery to medicines and many more. Amazon’s medicine service is named as “Amazon Pharmacy” and will offer the delivery of both over-the-counter and prescription-based drugs and other products including health devices and traditional herbal medicines. Amazon Pharmacy will start its operations firstly in the southern city of Bengaluru.
Amazon Pharmacy move by Amazon will increase the online competition in India with rivals Flipkart, JioMart and many other small players. In June the company had decided to open 10 new warehouses in India and along with this started offering auto insurance and have also secured clearance license for alcohol delivery in West Bengal.
The government has not made regulations for online drug sales, or e-pharmacies and several online sellers such as Medlife, Netmeds, PharmEasy and 1mg has already threatened offline drug stores with exclusive discount offers for taking competitive advantage in pharma delivery.
