India’s newest airline Akasa Air has reported that the personal information of some passengers, such as name, gender, address, phone numbers and email, has been leaked to ‘unauthorised individuals. The airline, however, has asserted that there was no intentional hacking attempt.
The incident has been reported to Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). CERT-In is the government-authorised nodal agency entrusted with dealing with matters of this nature.
Earlier this month, Akasa Air launched commercial flight operations, the first being on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route via the B737 Max aircraft. On August 25, a technical configuration error related to sign-up and login service was reported. Consequently, some registered users’ personal information may have been viewed by unauthorised individuals. However, the company has also confirmed that no travel-related or payment-related information was compromised.
The airline’s main investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala passed away on August 14. Its CEO Vinay Dube has asserted that the carrier is well-capitalised and has the financial means to place an order for more planes. As of now, it plans to operate 150 weekly flights by the end of September.
