Air India on Friday announced an 80% reduction in the use of single-use plastics on all flights across its global network.
In addition to introducing reusable linen bags on board, one of the steps taken to achieve this feat is the replacement of plastic zip-lock bags for cutlery with paper wrappers, plastic straws with paper straws, and plastic stirrers with wooden stirring sticks.
As well as fully compostable bags, the airline has introduced 100% compostable PET lids and single-use plastic bags. “Since Air India’s privatisation, Air India has been working towards reductions under the leadership of its in-house expert team and with the support of its catering partners and several suppliers, to reduce the carrier’s environmental impact continuously,” the airline said.
Air India has completely removed 500 ml plastic water bottles from all economy class seat pockets on wide-body aircraft operating international flights. Furthermore, 200 ml water bottles on international and domestic flights have been significantly reduced in size and are now only available on pre-order meals plate.
The airline has also introduced the service of pouring water from one-litre water bottles during flights. “In addition to pursuing multiple other opportunities to reduce the use of single-use plastics further, the airline is working to introduce paper cutlery for economy class passengers as soon as possible,” the statement said.
