UN Secretary-General António Guterres will meet President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine next week after talks with President Vladimir Putin over the war in Moscow, the United Nations said on Friday. Guterres will meet Zelensky and Ukraine’s foreign minister on Thursday, two days after a visit to Moscow, the United Nations said in a statement. Putin will meet Guterres on Tuesday, the Kremlin confirmed on Friday.
Guterres sent a letter this week asking for these in-person meetings to restore the initiative of the United Nations, which the crisis has primarily sidelined since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. Part of the reason is that the war has divided the permanent members of the UN Security Council: The United States, France, the United Kingdom, China, and Russia.
China refused to condemn the invasion, describing Russia as a victim of Western efforts to weaken it. In a letter sent Tuesday, Guterres sought to promote dialogue to end the war. “At this time of danger and consequences, he wants to discuss urgent measures to bring about peace in Ukraine,” spokesman Stephen Dujarric said this week.
Guterres has had little contact with Zelensky since the war began, speaking with him by phone only once on March 26. Putin has not answered Guterres’ calls and has not had any contact with him since the UN secretary-general said the invasion violated the UN charter.
