Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport, Delhi has started making arrangements for storing coronavirus vaccines. IGI’s cargo unit will be able to hold around 75 lakh vaccine vials every day, said officials on Wednesday. Manpower will be increased to handle temperature-sensitive immunity products when the vaccines will reach Delhi.
The Drugs Controller General of India is yet to give approval to any of the COVID-19 vaccines for the emergency-use to prevent spread of coronavirus. There are several steps being taken care-off to store the vaccines before their eventual arrival in the city. The vaccine preparedness exercise requires all necessary permissions, registrations and approvals to be complied with an airport official said.
The main storage area has two cold chambers, one capable with minus 20 degrees Celsius temperature which is useful for Moderna vaccine when it reaches India, and the other with 2-8 degrees Celsius storage section needed to store vaccines from Oxford University and Bharat Biotech. However, the efforts are being made to store Pfizer vaccine at minus 70 degrees Celsius temperature.
The airport managers have been in constant contact with the civic authorities regarding the arrangements to be made for storing live promising vaccine against coronavirus disease. Under Sanjivani (named after the herb of mythology capable to revive the almost dead), the protective jab distribution could be begin by the end of January next year.
