Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday assured that the government will decide the right age for marriage of daughters of the country as the concerned committee submits its report.
PM Modi also spoke about the steps taken by the government for maintaining health care and hygiene of women. “We are taking appropriate actions for our daughters” well-being. He said through Jal Jeevan Mission every household will be provided water and “We are providing sanitary pad for Re 1 each”.
On 22 September, the central government said that a taskforce has been constituted for examining the correlation of the age of marriage and motherhood. Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Smriti Irani in a written reply to Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Gupta said that a task force will examine the correlation of the age of marriage and motherhood on, “(i) health, medical well-being and nutritional status of mother and neonate/infant/child, during pregnancy, birth and thereafter, (ii) key parameters like Infant Mortality Rate, Maternal Mortality Rate, Total Fertility Rate, Sex Ratio at Birth, Child Sex Ratio, and (iii) any other relevant points pertaining to health and nutrition in this context”.
MP Sushil Kumar Gupta asked whether the government is reconsidering the legal marriage age for the daughters of the country, which currently stands at 18.
