Microsoft-backed Wicresoft to Exit China, Cut Jobs: Report

Wicresoft was Microsoft's first joint venture in China.

According to reports, Microsoft’s joint venture Wicresoft will shut down its China operations starting Tuesday, resulting in around 2,000 job cuts.

The decision follows Microsoft’s move to end outsourcing after-sales support in China to Wicresoft, raising concerns about how it will service local Windows and Office users.

The layoffs will mainly affect Microsoft’s outsourced team in China. Wicresoft has not commented on the closure. Microsoft is scaling back in China amid rising US-China tensions and competition from local firms like Kingsoft.

Founded in 2002, Wicresoft was Microsoft’s first joint venture in China and operates globally with over 10,000 employees. Microsoft recently shut down a Shanghai lab focused on AI and IoT.

A screenshot of an internal email about the shutdown circulated online, but Microsoft denied it referred to its operations, clarifying that it was about Wicresoft.

Infosys has signed a strategic deal with Spark New Zealand to help modernise the telco’s technology delivery using AI and cloud solutions. The move aims to boost efficiency and enhance customer experience.

Announced on 18th April, the partnership builds on a 16-year relationship between the two companies. Under the new agreement, Infosys will support Spark with software engineering and DevOps expertise to improve and manage its digital services systems.

Spark will continue to own its IT assets and lead its tech strategy. At the same time, Infosys will provide scale, innovation, and tools such as its AI-first platform, Infosys Topaz, and cloud solution, Infosys Cobalt.

Microsoft Blocks $4 Billion in Global AI Scam Attempts

Dhruva Kulkarni

In the past year, Microsoft blocked over $4 billion in fraud attempts as cybercriminals increasingly turned to AI tools for faster and more convincing scams.

According to its latest Cyber Signals report, Microsoft used machine learning to stop 1.6 million bot-based signups per hour and reject nearly 49,000 fake partnership attempts between April 2024 and April 2025. AI is helping scammers create phoney e-commerce websites, job offers, and customer service bots that are harder to detect.

“Cybercrime is a trillion-dollar problem,” said Kelly Bissell, Corporate VP at Microsoft Security. “AI helps us detect and respond much faster.”

Fraudsters now use AI to generate fake reviews, clone voices, build entire storefronts, and impersonate tech support. Microsoft has tracked significant scam activity in China and Germany, with large online markets.

Fake online stores can be launched in minutes using auto-generated content and AI-powered chatbots that stall refunds and fool buyers. Job scams are also evolving, with AI-generated recruiter profiles and interview responses designed to steal personal information.

Microsoft also uncovered a campaign by hacker group Storm-1811, which used Windows Quick Assist to gain remote access to victims’ devices through social engineering—not AI, but a reminder of evolving threats.

Microsoft is embedding fraud protection into product design to counter these attacks through its Secure Future Initiative. New defences include:

  • Microsoft Edge tools to block impersonation and scareware
  • Quick Assist alerts before remote access is granted
  • Remote Help for secure enterprise support
  • Digital Fingerprinting to block 4,400+ suspicious sessions daily
  • LinkedIn algorithms to detect fake job listings

The company is also partnering with the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) to share intelligence with governments and other tech firms.

Tips to Stay Safe

Microsoft advises watching for these red flags:

  • Unsolicited tech support messages
  • Job offers from free email domains or requiring payment
  • Too-good-to-be-true online deals
  • Chatbots or interviews that sound unnatural

OpenAI Plans Its Own X-like Social Media Platform

Dhruva Kulkarni

OpenAI is reportedly developing a social network similar to Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter), with an early prototype focused on ChatGPT’s image generation and a social feed.

It’s unclear if the platform will be a separate app or integrated into ChatGPT. CEO Sam Altman has been seeking feedback on the project from outsiders.

This move would put OpenAI in competition with Musk’s X and Meta’s platforms like Facebook and Instagram while providing valuable data for AI model training. It could also intensify the rivalry between Altman and Musk, following Musk’s failed bid to buy OpenAI and a lawsuit accusing the company of straying from its original mission.

If launched, the social network would give OpenAI its data, competing with Meta’s plans for a similar AI service. However, it remains uncertain whether the project will go public.

Apple to Process User Data On-Device to Power AI Features

Dhruva Kulkarni

Apple will analyse user data directly on devices to enhance its AI capabilities while maintaining user privacy. The move aims to narrow the gap with rivals like OpenAI and Alphabet.

Until now, Apple has relied on synthetic data to train its AI models, but this approach often lacked real-world accuracy. The new method compares synthetic inputs with actual emails stored locally on iPhones, iPads, and Macs to better align AI performance with real usage—without collecting personal data.

This shift is expected to improve Apple Intelligence features such as Writing Tools, notification summaries, and message recaps. It will roll out in beta versions of iOS and iPadOS 18.5 and macOS 15.5 for users who opt into device analytics.

Apple is also upgrading other AI tools like Genmoji, Image Playground, and Memories using privacy-focused techniques including differential privacy and synthetic data generation.

OpenAI to Launch New AI Tools, Confirms CEO Sam Altman

Dhruva Kulkarni

OpenAI is set to launch new AI models, with CEO Sam Altman teasing “a lot of good stuff” this week, starting tomorrow.

Recent OpenAI launches include o1-mini (reasoning model), GPT-4.5, and native image generation for GPT-4o.

GPT-5’s release is delayed due to a GPU shortage, but new models like GPT-4.1 and o3 Pro may be launched soon.

OpenAI’s o series models focus on reasoning abilities to help with coding, math, and problem-solving. New models are expected to make app and website development easier, even for non-coders.
