Starbucks workers have expanded their strike to four more U.S. cities, including New York, according to the union representing over 10,000 baristas.
The five-day Starbucks strike, which began on Friday, initially impacted cafes in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Seattle. According to Workers United, The strike has expanded to include New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, and St. Louis.
Starbucks stated that the strike has had little impact on its operations, with only a few stores affected.
Workers United demands a significant wage increase of 64% for hourly workers immediately and 77% for a three-year contract, which Starbucks has deemed unsustainable.
The strike now includes 10 cities, such as Columbus, Ohio; Denver; and Pittsburgh, with concerns that it may affect Starbucks’ holiday sales.
Talks between Starbucks and the union broke down over unresolved issues, including wages, staffing, and schedules, leading to the strike.
Workers United warned that the strike could extend to “hundreds of stores” by Christmas Eve, 24th December.
Starbucks has been negotiating with the union since April and reported that more than eight bargaining sessions have occurred, with 30 agreements reached.
