Startups recognised under the Indian government’s Startup India initiative have generated more than 1.66 million direct jobs across 55 sectors, according to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

These startups, extending their impact beyond technology, are contributing to workforce expansion while fostering innovation and boosting economic development in India.

Sector-wise job creation

According to data recorded as of 31 October, there have been significant contributions across diverse industries, which are as follows: 

• Healthcare and Life Sciences: 1,47,639 jobs. 
• Education – 90,414 jobs. 
• IT Services – 2,04,119 jobs. 
• Construction: 88,702 jobs. 
• Food & Beverages: 88,468 jobs.
• Finance Technology: 56,819 jobs.  
• Renewable Energy 41,523 jobs.
• Green Technology 27,808 jobs.
• Professional Sservices 94,060 jobs.
• Artificial Intelligence 23,918 jobs.
• Robotics 5,956 jobs

Launched on 16 January 2016, the Startup India initiative provides a comprehensive framework to support startups. Key programs such as the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS), and Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS) address various stages of the startup lifecycle.

Initiatives like the States’ Startup Ranking, National Startup Awards, and Innovation Week encourage competition and foster innovation nationwide.

Digital platforms such as the Startup India Hub and Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) simplify resource access and collaboration, particularly for startups in non-metro cities.

These efforts are aimed at decentralising entrepreneurial opportunities, ensuring that Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities also benefit from India’s growing startup ecosystem.
