PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, emphasised the need for a focus on small farmers and strategies to boost their income to achieve the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Over the last decade, both Central and state governments have launched initiatives to support small and marginal farmers, according to PK Mishra.
In his lecture, Mishra stressed the importance of addressing smallholder agriculture to achieve the goal of a developed India (Viksit Bharat) by 2047.
Various measures have been introduced, such as crop diversification, technology use, climate-resilient crops, better storage, and farmer-producer organisations.
Mishra highlighted the need for a focused strategy to increase the income of small farmers for overall progress.
Mishra suggested diversifying towards more profitable crops, livestock, and fisheries and using technology tailored to small farms.
He noted that small holdings make up 88% of India’s 168 million operational farms, and this dominance will continue in the near future.
