Trudeau to Cut Sales Tax and Send Checks to Canadians Ahead of Election

Trudeau stated that while the government can't control prices, it can help by putting more money in people's pockets.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government announced plans to temporarily remove the federal sales tax on certain items and send checks to millions of Canadians facing rising costs as a federal election approaches.

In response to rising costs and dissatisfaction ahead of a federal election, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government announced a plan to temporarily lift the federal sales tax on select items and provide checks to millions of Canadians.

Trudeau acknowledged that while the government cannot control prices, it can help by putting more money in people’s pockets.

Canadians who earned up to 150,000 Canadian dollars (Rs 107,440) in 2023 will receive a one-time check of 250 Canadian dollars, with 18.7 million Canadians expected to benefit.

The sales tax break will begin on 14th December and end on 15th February, covering children’s clothing, toys, diapers, restaurant meals, alcohol, Christmas trees, snacks, beverages, and video game consoles.

The move comes as Trudeau prepares for an election and faces frustration from voters due to the cost of living, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Polls show the Liberals trailing the opposition Conservatives, with the latest Nanos poll indicating a 39% to 26% lead for the Conservatives.

Trudeau, who has led the Liberals since 2015, is seeking his fourth consecutive term, which no Canadian prime minister has achieved in over a century.
