Government to Introduce New Policy for Elderly Soon

Currently, only 5% of India’s elderly have access to institutional care.

The government will soon introduce a new policy for senior citizens, announced Amit Yadav, Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, at an event hosted by The Association of Senior Living India (ASLI). The association will also hold its 5th ASLI Ageing Fest on 6th December 2024 in Bengaluru.

The ministry plans a new policy for senior citizens and has consulted with stakeholders.

The government will provide health coverage under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of income.

Rajit Mehta stated that by 2050, India’s senior population will exceed 300 million, increasing demand for senior care solutions.

Currently, only 5% of India’s elderly have access to institutional care, and over half lack social security.

Rajit Mehta highlighted the need for inclusive, accessible, and sustainable senior care models due to the lack of geriatric healthcare services, with less than 0.7 hospital beds per 1,000 elderly.

He emphasised that wellness, healthcare, and housing solutions focusing on safety, comfort, and community support should be prioritised.

Ankur Gupta noted that affordable senior living projects are challenging due to the high costs of services, including healthcare and construction costs.
