According to co-founder Cliff Obrecht, Canva’s India business has more than doubled in growth over the past year, playing a key role in boosting the company’s $2.5 billion annual revenue run rate.
Canva is making strong inroads into India by leveraging its Facebook-based communities, which include over 240,000 freelancers and 10,000 teachers. Globally, the platform has 200 million monthly active users, though the specific user count in India remains undisclosed.
Co-founder Cliff Obrecht highlighted that localisation is a top priority for Canva in India, with efforts focused on creating a product that reflects India’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity.
India ranks as Canva’s fifth-largest market, with approximately 139 million presentations created in the past year. Popular tools, including photo background remover and Instagram social media templates, are widely used among Indian users.
According to co-founder Cliff Obrecht, Canva currently operates without a physical office in India, though its India-based remote team has nearly doubled in size over the past year.
Competing with major players like Adobe, Canva has seen its valuation reach around $32 billion through recent secondary share sales, where proceeds went to existing investors rather than the company itself.
Canva’s India strategy focuses on localising features to meet the needs of Indian content creators and social media influencers. The company collaborates with over 120 Indian creators who produce thousands of customised templates and engage the community with unique designs.
Recently, Canva introduced its ‘Enterprise Subscription’ for large companies, allowing them to adopt Canva at a corporate scale. Revenue from this business line has grown by 300% over the past year.
Canva is now used by about 95% of Fortune 500 companies and has secured significant partnerships with major global brands like Atlassian, HP, NYSE, and DHL Express.
The company is enhancing its design capabilities with AI, acquiring multiple firms to strengthen its tools. In August, Canva acquired Leonardo.ai and launched Dream Lab, a generative AI tool that turns text prompts into detailed visuals, enabling tasks like creating storyboards and on-brand stock images.
